Meet Thomas Larson
Owner of Just Dump It
From a Pickup Truck to a Local Business
Thomas “Tom” Larson didn’t start with a fleet of trucks or a big crew. He was a college freshman with a pickup truck, a strong back, and an uncle who needed help hauling unwanted stuff away.
Soon, friends and neighbors started asking Tom for help, too. One hauling job led to another, and what began as helping people clear out their belongings started looking like a real business.
At the time, Tom was studying entrepreneurship at Central Connecticut State University. He likes to joke that his professor had to give him an “A” because he’d already put what he was learning into practice by launching a business.
In 2008, Tom founded Just Dump It, turning those early hauling jobs into a junk removal company based in Old Lyme, CT. What started with one pickup truck grew into a business helping people clear homes, businesses, and properties throughout the surrounding communities.
What Tom Has Learned From Years on the Job
After years in junk removal, Tom understands that clearing out a property isn’t always as simple as throwing things away. Sometimes it’s a garage full of belongings that have piled up over time. Other times, it’s an entire house that needs to be emptied before a sale, a move, or a new chapter.
Through his work, Tom has built experience with many types of cleanup projects, including:
- Estate cleanouts
- Residential and commercial junk removal
- Dumpster rentals for home and business projects
- Shed, boat, camper & RV removal
- Bulky furniture and specialty item removal
Every property brings its own challenges. A family sorting through years of belongings has different concerns than a property manager preparing a rental for its next tenant.
Tom understands the importance of listening, figuring out what needs to go, and treating the property and the people involved with care.
Why Tom Believes Old Belongings Deserve a Second Look
Tom has always had an interest in antiques, and that interest has influenced the way he approaches unwanted belongings. He knows that something sitting unused in one home might still have value to someone else. An old piece of furniture, a household item, or something tucked away in storage doesn’t always belong in the trash.
Usable belongings may be donated to organizations such as Goodwill, the Salvation Army, or Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. Other materials are recycled when appropriate, and yard waste is composted.
For Tom, removing unwanted items and finding another use for them can go hand in hand. It’s a practical way to help people clear their spaces without treating everything they no longer need as garbage.
Giving Back to the Communities He Serves
Tom’s connection to the community goes beyond hauling junk. Over the years, he has donated his time, crew, and truck to support fundraising efforts connected to Habitat for Humanity and Autism Speaks.
As Tom puts it, “It’s important to help people out.” That attitude also shows up in the company’s involvement in local cleanup projects.
Through Project Oceanology, the team has provided dumpsters for volunteers collecting abandoned lobster traps from coastal waters and handled the disposal afterward. The company has also supported cleanup efforts at Sound View Beach in Old Lyme, helping remove garbage and debris collected along the shoreline.
These projects give Tom and his team another way to put their equipment and hauling experience to use in the places they call home.
A Little More About Just Dump It
What began as a college student’s hauling work has grown into a local business serving homeowners, families, real estate agents, property managers, and businesses. Today, Just Dump It handles everything from unwanted furniture to full estate cleanouts, commercial property clearing, dumpster rentals, and larger removal projects.
The company serves:
- Old Lyme
- East Lyme
- Old Saybrook
And other communities across:
- New London
- Middlesex
- New Haven County
The work has grown since those first jobs with Tom’s pickup truck, but the idea behind it remains familiar: help people get unwanted belongings out of the way so they can get on with whatever comes next.
